Life in relationships with children and young people and adults can be confusing, especially when there are additional challenges! The I Matter Learning Journey is designed to help you build a deeper, practical understanding of relationship health — whether you’re a parent, professional, or part of an organisation. In this project we believe that positive community is vital to relationship health so we are developing a locality approach.
Our first locality hub is in the Kendal area. We work in Kendal to progress I Matter Training for professionals and parents and individuals.
We are working with others to think about locality hubs in other places. If you are in a hub, this is the first page for personal learning interest.

If you’re here, a professional in your locality may have suggested that learning a little more about relationship health and the I Matter approach could be helpful for you or your family.
This is a gentle place to start. You’re not being assessed, diagnosed, or judged — and there’s no pressure to commit to anything.
Relationship health is about understanding how stress, safety, connection, and support affect the way we relate to ourselves and to others — especially within families.
When children or adults are struggling, it often shows up in relationships: at home, at school, or with professionals. Understanding this can reduce blame and help everyone respond more helpfully.
The I Matter approach helps parents and professionals:
It is practical, reflective, and grounded in well-established theory — but it is taught in a way that is accessible and human.
A short introduction to relationship health and the I Matter framework. This helps you decide whether the approach feels useful and relevant.
More structured learning, time to reflect, and optional study support. This stage helps ideas settle into everyday family life.
Deeper learning for those who want to embed the approach over time, often alongside schools or local services.
When parents, schools, and professionals share a common understanding of relationship health, support becomes clearer and more joined-up.
Families don’t have to keep explaining themselves, and schools are better able to respond with empathy and consistency.
This is why many families are introduced to the I Matter approach through schools, GP practices, or social prescribing pathways.
The I Matter Learning Journey has been designed to make it flexible and so accessible.
We recommend a combination of online learning with personalised consultations and study support for both professionals and for personal learning, though we are also piloting completely self-paced learning.
