About the I Matter Framework

Seeing children's challenging behaviour differently - understanding the adult role

Is there something wrong with the challenging child or is this child communicating something that can help us help them?

In the I Matter Project we are passionate about helping professionals and parents address the current concerns about children's mental health and wellbeing through ensuring that they have access to training and services that are well grounded in a good integration of the availlable evidence . This means that we seek to support the workforce and parents and carers  to make positive changes, creating healthier and happier home and school environments, as key to building healthier communities.

Over the past 10 years we have supported hundreds of professionals and parents of families to transform work and  family life for the better in all sorts of ways – including improved emotional wellbeing, parenting skills, and more developmental thinking.. We have worked with teachers and teaching assistants,GP's, Paediatricians, social workers, school nurses and counsellors.

Drawing the Evidence Together

The research relevant to children covers a vast range of publications, approaches, and perspectives.  The greatest challenge for front line practitioners and parents is knowing which of this research is most important and why.  In the face of this complexity in recent times we have seen a narrowing and overmedicalisation of the explanations for challenging behaviour in children.  Our health and educational services have moved in the direction of diagnosis of disorders but what has got lost is the way that development takes place in a relationship context.    The I Matter Framework offers a concerted challenge to this drift by offering an accessible training that draws together resaerch on stress states, including social those linked with social inequalities and trauma, attachment relationships, child development, brain development and the adult role including the power of our own beleifs and attitudes.   This framework is taught as a very practical accessible approach through the medium of posters and online learning teaching supported by discussion and workshops and online coaching

Restoring confidence in relationships

An accurate understanding of what the evidence is really saying to us about the contributors to children's mental health and wellbeing is really important.  Childhood and notably the earliest years of life have a profound bearing on life chances and on physical and emotional health throughout childhood and beyond. Healthy relationships in early child hood support greater confidence, health and resiliency to stress in adulthood.  Teachers and Parents want the best for the children in their care, but when a child is challenging it isn’t always easy to know what ‘best’ is nor is it easy to know how to address entrenched challenges to provide a healthier home or classroom environment.

I Matter Framework Training  provides a flexible approach for skilling up school and community staff and parents combining online learning with workshops and webinars and printed resources. All of our support for professionals and parents  is underpinned by the I Matter Framework and our understanding of key elements of supporting behaviour change .   We focus on helping professionals and parents gain the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to help their c.ass and whole family adopt a healthier, happier lifestyle and to give children a great start in life.

We work with health and educaiton professionals, helping them develop the skills to support children and families build the strong healthy relationships and make real and lasting changes that  help vulnerable children and the whole family and communities have a brighter future.

Our focus

We view ‘a healthy adult child relationships’ in its broadest possible sense across home, school and community..  We adopting a holistic approach aiming to help professionals and parents build their confidence in their own role.

We focus on working in partnership with professionals and parents as they are the experts on their own lives and families and classrooms. We share the evidence and then we support discussions.   We never tell participants  what to do – no one likes to be told, and telling simply doesn’t work. Instead, we support parents and education staff to identify the things they are doing well and the things they would like to change, helping them build on strengths and decide on their own strategies to achieve their goals.

Our impact

I Matter Framework Training works – professionals and parents who join our training report that they make long term changes.   Both professionala and parents often describe our training and support as ‘life-changing’. One professional and parent recently said 'this training gave me answers to questions I was looking for for over 30 years.  It has changed my work and my home life for the better.
