Hi, I'm Dr Cathy Betoin.   I am a practising clinical psychologist, an experienced teacher and a parent.  I call myself a relationship health practitioner.

I have over 30 years of experience with children and families and with training of professionals and parents but in 2020 I was amazed when I discovered no books  written on the issue of relationship health...

You're likely to love an I Matter Approach and the I Matter Learning Journey if you can say Yes to three or more of the following:

✅ You're someone who wants to learn how to understand current challenges through a relationship health lens

✅ You're a professional who supports young people and families eg a GP or a teacher or a social worker or police officer or policy maker
✅
You're a concerned parent or carer who wants to be well equipped  for your role in relationships at homes, at work and in your community.

✅ You're concerned - sometimes overwhelmed - about what is happening and what you are seeing and you want to be part of the solution not part of the problem

✅ You've been feeling for sometime as if something significant is missing in what you learned and in the way you were prepared for personal and professional roles, but you are not sure what

✅ You want to understand more about what you are seeing and what you can do

✅ You want to feel more hopeful, and less discouraged, but are not sure where to focus

✅ You're ready to learn, to grow and change yourself if you could get a clear direction

✅ You've had enough of quick fixes and empty promises

✅ You want to work with others to create a better future for yourself, your family and your community

Many professionals and parents and young people can feel stuck and discouraged in the face of the many challenging situations we are hearing about every day

You might also spend a lot of time:

- Feeling stressed - and wondering why there are so many adults and young people with mental health concerns
- Wondering why the home and work relationships you thought would be fun can be so difficult
- Wanting to feel more confident in your roles but not feeling clear yourself
- Wondering when SOMEONE is going to DO SOMETHING
- Talking with others who feel as equally discouraged as you
- Feeling sad - as it wasn't supposed to be like this
- Trying to stay optimistic but unclear how to do that
- Wondering if there is something YOU can do

Ask me how I know about all of that....?  It's because that's where I started with this project.

None of the above is how you want to be feeling... you would like to be enjoying your life and your role and relationships with your family, and colleagues and local community... but it can often be super difficult...

The good news is that since having spent time trying to figure out what to really focus on and what the research was REALLY saying, one day I discovered what I was looking for.... this was this missing idea that helped to make sense both of what I was seeing and experiencing at work and at home AND that helped me to understand what I should focus on.

The missing idea was this term Relationship Health

My view is that this overlooked term Relationship Health is so important.  With the help of this idea challenging situations still look challenging but they also look very different as it is easier to make sense of what is happening:

Since understanding this term and the research behind it:

👉 I now know what to focus on and why when challenging situations are present.  Even though there may not be quick fixes, there is finally a path and progress on that path is something I have much more control over than I initially realised.
👉 I am much clearer about the process of figuring out my own role in different situations.
👉 I used to know that some things ''worked' and some didn't - I just wasn't sure why - now I am much clearer about why..
👉 I now have tools to help me make my thinking transparent which helps others feel that they can start to understand too.
👉 The I Matter Framework and the term relationship health helps me to work with other ACTION-TAKERS who also want to be part of the solutions to challenges not part of the problems and are committed to progressing more relationship health in their own homes, work settings and communities.     I am, excited to be helping people who want to grow...
👉 I feel more optimistic as I have seen that difficult situations can be turned around.  I have seen this in my own home and work roles and those changes feel really good - and exciting
👉 I know that the positive change can be achieved when we have a clear path to work on together.
👉 I still get overwhelmed at times, but it doesn't last so long as I know how to take the steps that can help me and others move forward - and I know why these will work

With an understanding of relationship health and the solid foundations set out in the I Matter Framework, home and work life is now much more fulfilling, still challenging at times but also much more FUN (most of the time!)!

Once you have a clear map and a system working for you and underpinning your decision making and actions in challenging situations, you'll be able to move on from the stuff that doesn't work too.

The I Matter Framework provides a foundation for a longer term learning process.   It can help you spend

Much less time feeling lost in the fog ...

Much less time feeling confused and unclear about what to focus on (or...

Much less time on conflicts that don't seem to progress anywhere useful...

Much less time feeling helpless and hopeless...

Much less time blaming others...

Much less time in frustration..

Clarity and a good map is KEY to turning challenging situations into opportunities for growth for adults and for young people

The best part?

Relationship Health is an idea that is impactful even if you DON'T have a lot of time to read or study (I don't either.)

This is a way of thinking that you can dip into for ideas, and help for your thinking

And if relationship health makes sense to you then you can start making a difference in challenging situations just through getting clearer about what is happening and about the role that YOU want to play, and about how you want to work with others.  This will start off or help you progress a process that  can then serve you for months and years.

As part of an I Matter Relationship Health Learning Journey you will explore:

1️⃣ How to go from confusion to clarity to organise a range of knowledge you already know a lot about

2️⃣ How to use these ideas to make sense of what you are seeing in challenging incidents

3️⃣ How to start with you and equip yourself with key skills you will need to help yourself and help others

One Quick Note:   Who is this thinking and approach NOT for?

This is something it is important to spell out before we go any further.

I Matter Training and Relationship Health is NOT for people who are primarily focussed on getting OTHERS to change

In this area of practice we can all identify others who we find difficult or we would like to change:

👉 You might be thinking of a family member you find difficult- child or adult
👉 Or a colleague who is challenging for you
👉 Or a client or client group that you struggle to feel confident with .

With an I Matter Relationship Health learning journey, we take an indirect route to this change process!

So in the first stages of training this is NOT a Train the Trainer process!

Of course we might REALLY hope that these others would change.

However that is not where our focus is going to be.

Your only priority is how can YOU make the changes in your varied roles that helps you to be more effective and impactful in progressing relationship health!

We have seen over and over again that when you take responsibility and work with others and get clear on your own path then things can shift - and not before!

Fortunately this personal growth process can be very interesting!

Here is what professionals and parents have said

I have liked so many aspects of the I Matter Training. It has given me much more clarity, confidence and strength to help myself and my child. I can only sing its praises in every way. It has made a huge difference to how I see myself, my situation and my children and has given me the tools to be a better parent/coach for my children. It has also helped in other areas of my life such as work. Parent of children aged 5-11yrs

This training has taught me way more than I could have imagined, I love it!       Foster Carer

This training has changed the way I practice at work and in my home relationships. I have enjoyed learning online and found the modules manageable with enough to be stimulating.  I really enjoyed the dynamic of the group - it was interesting hearing everyone's varied experiences.   The changes I have made have benefited me personally, and my family and my professional role.  I want to carry on and learn more.     General Practitioner who completed Core and Extended Learning Journey
