GUIDANCE NOTES: WHAT IS I MATTER AND RELATIONSHIP HEALTH TRAINING
HOW CAN PEOPLE ACCESS IT?
I Matter is a psychoeducational intervention. In Kendal PCN it sits within social prescribing. For schools it is part of the pastoral offer. Participating organisations can offer entry level workshops. There is also an the option for online learning.
As a psychoeducational approach, the primary goal is not to ‘provide support’ but to provide education and hold a space for people who want to think about current challenges and learn skills to manage their own situation with more confidence.
To get best value from workshops or online training, people need to be ready to learn and reflect on their own role. Not everyone is wanting this or ready with it. So we ask everyone to have a conversation with a Link professional first, about their own situation and about the change process.
Faced with a challenging situations: individuals have a common pattern of change:
1. Ignoring/Dismissing/Blaming Self/Others: Precontemplation
2. Crash or crisis – something needs to change: Contemplation
3. Search for experts who will do something – often find them disappointing
4. Recognition that Self has to change and learn new skills - Readiness
Readiness includes: Preparation, Action, Maintenance, Termination
5. Relapse to 2/3 or Re-engagement with 4
6. Stable Change
Any participant interested in online learning should watch the free online training and have a conversation with an I Matter informed Link professional before submitting an expression of interest. NB: The Role of Link Professional is NOT to be anything other than an informed point of contact who knows about I Matter approach and programme. A Link professional can be informed about other local options and ensure the programme is likely a fit.
Role of GP/Health/Education I Matter Link professional is to help establish whether patient has personal readiness (ie Stage 4 – recognition of personal need to change and invest in building own understanding and skills. Most important if there is a current concern. This is done through conversations between the Link Prof and the individual.
