Information for Clients and Professional Code of Ethics
I Matter Training and Relationship Health Matters CIC (IM-RH) require IM-RH coaches to conform to the following ethical principles and shall hold coaches accountable for any departure from them. All licensed coaches shall also be fully licensed professionals with primary responsibility to their own professional code of ethics
I Matter-Relationship Health Philosophy of Coaching:
IM-RH teaches and supports relationship health training and coaching informed by the I Matter Framework. Our form of training and coaching honors the participant as the expert in their own life and work. We believe that every client is creative, resourceful, and whole and already knowledgeable. Using this as a foundation for our training and coaching process, we believe it is the coach’s responsibility to:
+ Educate, support and challenge the client.
+ Discover, clarify, and align with the client’s personal goals, objectives and timeline.
+ Encourage the client’s self-discovery and self-empowerment.
+ Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies.
+ Hold the client accountable to the work.
IM-RH Definition of Relationship Coaching
I Matter Informed Relationship Health Training and coaching is a professional relationship that helps people deepen their understanding and overcome roadblocks to achieve exciting results in their personal and professional relationships, with themselves and other people.
The process of training and coaching encourages clients to deepen their knowledge, insights, learning, improve their skills and performance in home and work roles, and enhance their quality of life and contribution through self-discovery and self-empowerment.
IM-RH Coaching complements online study of the I Matter Framework. An I Matter coaching relationship starts with a choice of focus and an initial assessment and selection of goals. Commitment to self-paced study is important. In each subsequent coaching call, the client chooses the focus, while the coach actively listens and reflects back what they hear until the client feels understood. This interaction creates clarity and helps to move the client into action in the context of the focus they have chosen. At all times clients remain responsible for the choices they choose to take.
Coaching aims to accelerate the client’s progress through training and on their own life goals and challenges by validating their experience, providing greater focus and awareness of choice, challenging them to take responsibility for their experience and take action toward their goals.
Coaching concentrates on discovering and clarifying goals, values, and eliciting strategies and solutions to get the client on track to achieve their future goals at a pace that is achievable for the client.
IM-RH coaches recognize that results depend on the client’s intentions, choices, and actions as they are supported by the coach’s efforts and application of the coaching process.
Our coaches are trained in the I Matter Framework and in relationship health assessment. They offer a client and relationship health focussed coaching approach focussed on building insight and skills in self awareness and communication.
CONTRACT TERMS FOR TRAINEE AND CERTIFIED I MATTER RELATIONSHIP HEALTH FACILITATORS AND COACHES
IM-RH Coaching Is Not Psychotherapy
I understand that I Matter Relationship Health Training and coaching involves training to be a relationship health coach, not a therapist.
I understand that I did not receive any training with respect to psychotherapy in any form whatsoever.
I understand that training in the I Matter Framework (Level 1-3) or receiving a Level 4-5 I Matter Relationship Health Coach Certification and becoming a Certified I Matter Relationship Health Level Level 4-5 is not a license to practice psychotherapy.
I agree that after receiving my certification, I will not hold myself out as a counsellor, social worker, licensed marriage and family therapist, addiction counsellor, psychologist, or any other licensed mental health provider or psychotherapist simply by virtue of my certification.
I will not engage in treatment, diagnosis, testing, assessment, or counselling in a professional relationship to assist individuals or groups to alleviate behavioural and/or mental health disorders, resolve emotional, relationship, or attitudinal traumas.
I understand that my training does not count toward educational requirements toward a license to practice psychotherapy and that practicing as a Certified I Matter Relationship Health Level 1-3 or Level 4-5 Relationship Coach will not count toward practice hour requirements for licensing.
I understand that I Matter-Relationship Health Training does not provide psychotherapy supervision.
I agree that I will not engage in the unlicensed practice of psychotherapy.
IM-RH Standards of Ethical Conduct
Professional conduct as an I Matter Relationship Health Trainee or Certified Facilitator or Coach:
+ I will not knowingly make any public statements that are untrue or misleading, or make false claims in any written documents relating to the coaching profession. I will not use the resources of the i Matter Learning Journey in a professional role unless currently appropriately licensed to do so/
+ I will conduct myself in accordance with the IM-RH Code of Ethics in all training and supervisory situations.
+ I will purchase and maintain regular liability insurance to cover any allegations that a client may make, as well as have the client sign a Coaching Agreement form, releasing me of any legal responsibility.
+ I will always be honest about the nature of my title and certification when referring to them with client(s), in the general public, the media, promotional materials and within the confines of our profession.
+ I will treat other coaches with respect and refrain from public defamation.
+ I will treat the IM-RH team with respect, kindness, and personal responsibility if I have an issue with them.
+ I understand that if my behaviour is out of line as determined by Dr Cathy Betoin, Jacqui Wilson, or any team member my certification may be removed.
+ I will explain and obtain written confirmation (signature) that my coaching client(s) understand all terms of our coaching agreement including, but not limited to, the nature and potential value of coaching, the nature and limits of confidentiality, financial agreement(s) and any additional terms prior to the commencement of services.
+ I will accurately create, maintain, store and dispose of any records of work done in relation to the practice of coaching in a way that upholds the strictest levels of confidentiality with all parties. I agree to comply with all applicable laws and communicate with client(s) the conditions under which confidentiality will not be kept. Examples include: imminent or likely risk of harmful behaviour to self or others, illegal activity or similar. Clients will know I may need to inform the appropriate authorities in these or similar instances.
+ I will remain sensitive to shifts in value to my client(s) with regard to my coaching services and encourage them to seek additional/alternative services and/or make recommendations accordingly. I will disclose to my client(s) the potential for receipt of monies in exchange for a referral to a third party.
+ I respect the rights of all parties to end the coaching relationship at any time, for any reason, subject to the provisions in the coaching agreement.
+ I will be responsible for setting clear, appropriate, and culturally sensitive boundaries that govern any physical contact that I may have with my clients.
+ I will make the physical and mental well-being of each client a prime consideration.
+ I will not engage in verbal, physical, or emotional or sexual or financial abuse of any client.
+ I will coach each client within the limits of my training and competence and refer out when outside my skills, training, or capacity.
I will not work with people who:
+ Don’t make progress with their goals
+ Stay stuck in blame (self or other) and can’t seem to take any personal responsibility.
+ Have unaddressed mental health challenges that make our style of relationship health coaching very difficult or risky.
+ Have unaddressed childhood trauma that require psychotherapeutic support.
+ Are presently severely depressed and/or suicidal.
+ Have an ongoing addiction or eating disorder that is disruptive to their relationships and their life.
+ Are in abusive relationships of any kind (mental, verbal, emotional, physical, or spiritual).
If coaching begins and I learn that my client has any of the above, I will educate them about my training, my limitations and will refer them to a higher level of care immediately.
+ I will not become sexually involved with any client.
+ I will not discriminate against clients based on race, religion, or sexual orientation.
+ I will seek to avoid conflicts of interest between myself and my client(s).
IM-RH Pledge of Ethics: As a professional certified I Matter informed Trainee or Certified relationship coach, I acknowledge and agree to honor my ethical obligations to my coaching clients and colleagues and to the public at large. I pledge to comply with the IM-RH Code of Ethics, to treat people with dignity as equal human beings that are whole, resourceful, and creative, and to model these standards with those whom I coach.
If I breach this Pledge of Ethics or any part of the IM-RH Code of Ethics, I agree that IM-RH in its sole discretion may hold me accountable for doing so. I further agree that my accountability to IM-RH for any breach may include loss of my IM-RH certification and/or my IM-RH credentials.
