What is an Adult-Child Wellbeing 'I Matter' Approach?

The I Matter Framework offers an organised view of the evidence relevent to children's mental health and wellbeing.  An Adult-Child Welll-Being I Matter Approach is a manner of working with families derived from the I Matter Framework

We seek to empower the adults in the team around the child by ensuring that they are welltrained and best able to understand the underlying needs of the challenging child.    We recognise that the child develops within a network of relationships at home, school and community and that best outcomes occur when these systems are well informed abou tthe importance of their own role.

In particular we focus in on the wellbeing and confidence and support of the key adults in the relationship process as we see clearly that when the adult's confidence grows this can be key to improved outcomes for the child.   Moreover supporting the childs relationships supports longer term impact.

Why we focus on the adult role in the relationship?

An I Matter approach can be adapted to be a training and coaching approach with children and young people for both 1:1 and group work.   However we prefer this work to happen with the child and parents-carers together wherever possible - and at the appropriate moment - as we believe that it can be unhelpful to work just with the child as responsbility for the change  process is more often than not in the hand of adults.

When working with stressed parents and professionals, we  observe that positive change happens when individual parents and professionals are supported to engage in a reflective process in which they are feeling valued, important and capable

Our resources are carefully designed to support the thinking and reflective process and to support the emergence of healthy longer term relationships.

For the purposes of delivering training and coaching we integrate evidence based behaviour change models with a carefully curated theoretical curriculum necessary to address challenging behaviour seen in vulnerable children.    The Foundation A and Intermediate A courses introduce Theory ideas whilst the B courses support participants in putting Theory into Practice via an online coaching platform.

Our work has three key strands

We work in partnership with commissioners to identify and understand needs and deliver programmes that can respond to local public health challenges to include:

+ workforce development – in schools to support SEN and EHCP and in health with challenging children

+ family support

+ community building and peer support for professionals and for parents-carers

We have a structured curriculum to teach the I Matter Framework which can be delivered through

+ face to face workshops,

+ online learning or

+ a blend of the two.

Professionals and parents work with us to explore applications to challenges seen in their own setting.

The Structure of I Matter Training:

+ 0: Awareness Training:    Orientation to the I Matter Framework

+ 1: Foundation A and B:    Confusion to Clarity and Watching Affectionately

+ 2:  Intermediate A and B  Thinking Developmentally and Nurturing Growth

+ 3-5  Advanced:  Lead Professionals and Advanced Practitioners including Community Quality Marks

When working with participants our focus is

+ Strengths based, Solution focussed: supporting capacity for change and focussing on what we want

+ Relationship focussed – we develop supportive relationships to promote supportive relationships

+ Works with the readiness to change process – and uses initial assessment to guide this thinking

+ Wholistic – we focus on the full contributors to health through the I Matter Community Wheel

+ A focus on the changes that the individual themselves can make without needing others to change

+ Committed to the longer term view – challenging complex behaviour needs community

It's quite simple really - we offer resources and encourage people to take time to think and learn about what is happening around them..
