I Matter helps young people through four connected routes:

  1. Informing the adults around them — helping professionals, parents and carers understand stress, development and relationship health.
  2. Supporting school planning — offering developmentally informed foundations for RSHE and wider PSHE education.
  3. Supporting conversations — using I Matter resources in consultations with young people and families.
  4. Providing supported online learning — giving young people access to age-appropriate learning alongside an I Matter informed adult.

1. Strengthening adult understanding

The primary focus of I Matter learning is to build the understanding and skills of the adults around young people. When adults have a shared map, everyday conversations at home, at school and in the community can become more thoughtful and joined up.

2. Informing RSHE and PSHE

I Matter helps parents, carers and school staff understand how stress, development and relationships interact. Schools can draw on this learning when planning their Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and wider Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education.

I Matter provides a developmental framework and resources for discussion. Schools remain responsible for planning and delivering their curriculum.

3. Supporting conversations with young people and families

I Matter visual resources can help an I Matter informed practitioner explore questions with a young person and their family. They provide a shared language for making sense of patterns, priorities and possible next steps within the practitioner’s own role and responsibilities.

4. Supported online learning for young people

Young people can work through the I Matter online programme at their own pace, with an informed adult available to listen and discuss the ideas. The programme can be used with a supporting parent or carer, or within a school or community group led by an appropriately prepared professional.

Young people are encouraged to

  • Explore it — notice questions and patterns
  • Learn it — build understanding of stress, development and relationships
  • Live it — connect the ideas with everyday situations
  • Share it — talk about what they are learning with someone they trust

The to notice patterns, build understanding, connect ideas with everyday situations and talk with someone they trust.

Access is currently arranged individually.

Different routes are possible
Young people may be supported by a parent or carer who has completed I Matter Fundamentals, or
by an I Matter informed professional working through a participating school or community organisation.

We will discuss the young person’s age, interests and current support arrangements before offering access.
Parents, carers and young people are welcome to enquire even if their school is not currently participating.
Young people will need the support of an I Matter informed adult in a position of responsbility

We welcome expressions of interest from parents, schools and community organisations who would like to explore future access.

PLEASE NOTE: I Matter is an educational learning programme, not therapy or crisis support.   Our primary interest is to build understanding and skills with a focus on preparation, prevention and early intervention of challenges.   If there are concerns about a young person’s immediate safety or wellbeing, appropriate support should be sought through their family, school, health services or local safeguarding arrangements.
