I Matter Relationship Health Learning: Logic Model

Our proposed explanation of how I Matter learning may help adults make sense of experiences and build confidence for relationships.

The Need
We talk confidently about physical health and mental health but relationship health is an overlooked issue that plays a vital role in adult-adult and adult-well being.  In schools and clinics everywhere professionals and families find themselves struggling with challenging situations with great difficulties in accessing affordable relevant training in timely fashion that can build understanding and skills.

The content
I Matter Relationship Health Learning introduces the key conclusions of decades of research through a series of engaging visual posters and taught through an accessible online programme designed to support reflection and build understanding and skills notably building self-awareness in relation to the importance of ones own role.

Element Working theory of change
The Need In a time of high pressure on all systems, there is a need to invest in the building of understanding and skills that can support improved ability to problem solve and work collaboratively under pressure
Design Rationale An understanding of stress, development and relationships can help adults respond more constructively and with more maturity in high challenge situations at home, at work and in community

Under pressure, people can find it difficult to notice their reactions or consider alternative explanations. Training which promotes self-awareness and metacognition— noticing and reflecting on our own thinking—may create space for a more deliberate mature response.
Who Adults wanting to improve confidence in life and relationships
+ professionals in education, health and community roles,
+ parenting-caring or
+ personal learning for adult-adult relationships and personal resiliency

These purposes can overlap: a professional may also be a parent and use the ideas personally.
Learning activities One core - self-guided online learning pathway accessed by everyone.   Level 1-2 learning introducing the I Matter Model, I Matter Framework Fundamentals, Five Steps and Five Developmental Stages, alongside reflection and everyday practice.  Level 3 plus provides extended learning opportunities

Optional extras: opportunities for 1:1 and group study support that assists participants in making links with their own priority contexts
How change may happen I Matter learning aims to help people step outside of familiar everyday experiences to have time to understand the research evidence on wellbeing and have some tools to think about their own immediate experiences and the choices that are available to them.

Learning may also strengthen the belief that, although initial feelings and thoughts can arise without choice, we can develop more influence over how we respond, and that recognition of one's own agency is vital to health and wellbeing choices.
Short-term outcomes Greater understanding and use of relationship health and I Matter concepts to interpret experiences and support conversations. Greater self-reported awareness, confidence and ability to pause, consider different perspectives and choose a constructive next step.
Medium-term outcomes More consistent ability to use reflection, connection, boundary-setting and repair in professional, parenting and personal relationships. Evidence of actual improvements in relationships require further evaluation.
Longer-term aim A sustained and more stable ability to contribute to stronger relationship health and wellbeing at home, at work and in the community.

Conditions for learning: sufficient safety, time, accessibility and opportunity to practise.

Evaluation note: this is a working theory of change, rather than a statement of proven effectiveness. Self-reported changes may also reflect other support or changing circumstances. Learning does not replace therapy, safeguarding or specialist care.
