Supporting Yourself and Your Practice with the I Matter Programme
The I Matter Programme gives professionals practical learning and preventative support to strengthen relationships, wellbeing, and social-emotional development in the families and children you work with. It is not a therapy or diagnostic service and does not replace advice from health, mental health, or safeguarding practitioners. When additional support is needed, we encourage you to guide families to appropriate professional help.
What is covered by funding?
Universal & Early Support: Some elements may be publicly funded, particularly for professionals and families supporting children in early years and primary school, where early relational support has the greatest long-term impact.
Extended Learning: Usually self-funded, designed for professionals and families ready to deepen their understanding and skills with structured learning.
How professionals access I Matter Training:
Access is currently usually through participating organisations and Link Professionals but is sometimes via a recommendation.
Professionals complete a short questionnaire to guide them to the right level of training and support.
Training can start with a ‘supported start’, helping you identify goals for your practice and professional development.

What about people who are professionals AND parents?
The key is to think about what the top current priorities are and the degree of challenge.
If challenges at home are in a moderate range, then completing the professional training can be a way of starting to think about home issues.
If challenges at home are more escalated then you should focus on the parent-carer-personal path and not the professional pathway until such a time as the situation at home is more resolved. In this situation you will need at least one local I Matter informed Link, preferably a Lead to support your expression of interest.
Funding considerations:
I Matter Training is committed to supporting more prevention and early intervention. We work with primary care and schools on this priority.
There are many requests from those in situations which do not meet the criteria for early intervention and in which a brief 4 month intervention is not enough to bring about the key insights and skills building that are needed for sustained results. In this situation decisions are made on a case by case basis for funded or self-funded options for the longer programme. As places on the programme are limited, these decisions are impacted by evidence of sufficient local I Matter informed support in the Team Around a Family and evidence of motivation and capcity for change in the concerned adults.
