These are some of the questions people most frequently ask us:
Its for anyone who wants to learn about a relationship health to improving adult and child wellbeing.
It is quite difficult to explain this until you have jumped in to learn more. The I Matter Framework helps make well accepted ideas much clearer and so it supports better decision making
The I Matter Framework Fundamentals introduces 24 key ideas that are a vital foundation for improving wellbeing for adults and young people. Each idea is taught with an interesting infographic
No, we have found that many people who are interested in this training want to be able to progress their learning in a flexible fashion. We offer a monthly programme of events but these can be listened to later.
No! One of the most challenging parts of a professional role is helping other adults and young people in undersatnding their own role. However for this to happen, it is vital to have a really deep understanding yourself not just of the theory but also of the lived theory to practice.
We deeply believe that relationship health involves an ongoing life long learning process. The I Matter Framework is designed to ensure you have some solid foundations, but it is just a start.
Yes! The I Matter Framework and a Relationship health approach is designed to create a language that everyone can understand. However, we encourage adults to start by making sure that they have a deep understanding themselves. It is tempting to think that children need help to change when the first key changes are often needed from adults.
The I Matter Framework Fundamentals equips you to offer 'relationship health informed practice'. This means knowing about relationship health, working with others to join up practices and encouraging others to learn more. This is an area of practice that has been overlooked, but it is vitally important. On completion of the Fundamentals you can informally show and refer to the resources in your practice, but it is nor a license to train others in the I Matter Framework. Both require further training.
There are certificates that can be earned based on your own personal relationship health projects in direct roles. We take applications from people who have progressed their own personal relationship health project to join our programme for supporting others on an I Matter Relationship Health Learning Journey
REVIEW Having worked with Cathy Betoin for a number of years and trained in Gestalt Psychotherapy, the ideas in Cathy’s books and I Matter Programme were not new to me, though the way in which the ideas are brought together to create a kind of map to help navigate life are a beautiful and accessible way for anybody who is interested in improving their relationship health.
I have seen and experienced first hand, both personally and professionally, how powerful, liberating and life changing this programme is when you are willing to apply it to everyday life.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll ‘get’ it, make changes, then fall back into old patterns that no longer serve you. What the I Matter Programme offers is easy ideas with visuals (I like visuals!) to remind you when you fall back into old patterns of relating that aren’t working for you. They’re really simple and don’t require a lot of thinking to apply though it does require consistency over a long period of time if you want to really embed the changes in your life and relationships you’re committed to improving. If you’re willing to make the effort and value yourself enough, this is definitely for you.
I honestly believe if everybody took the time to access the programme, and implemented into their everyday life, there would be less demand on a lot of overstretched services and a lot more happier, confident people. It’s relevant for all adults navigating relationships with themselves and others, whether in a personal or professional role, to support them to address and manage their challenges.
Give it a go. You won’t be disappointed. Jacqui Wilson, Child and Family Social Prescriber
REVIEW I came across the idea of Relationship Health within my professional role as a Counselling
Practitioner, working primarily with adolescents (16 - 25 years) and have participated in the 'I Matter Fundamentals’ online course.
It became apparent to me that despite a secure stable upbringing (No ACES’s) my understanding of principles regarding physical and emotional needs was limited. This I attributed to familial and societal patterns of my own era.
Hearing adolescents’ stories I have recognised similar familial patterns to my own and wonder how different their lives could be, and could have been, if only they (parent & child) had had, and could have, access to this psychological knowledge regarding Relationship Health.
The principles and skills I have learnt from the ‘I Matter’ courses have benefitted me in my roles as; a Parent (19yrs; 21 yrs), an Employer, in Personal Relationships and as a Counsellor.
It’s never too late to learn new skills, I believe many adults and adolescents could benefit from improving their Relationship Health knowledge.
REVIEW: I Matter is a truly brilliant creation. I feel very lucky to have come across it as I began a new role as a Young Person & Families Social Prescriber. To be honest, if I hadn't come across it, I wouldn't still be in this role. I Matter and a focus on Relationship Health shifts the focus away from the "problem child" that needs fixing, towards empowering the parent / professional to take ownership of their role and understand how they can develop their own skills in order to be able to help their child develop theirs.

Hi, I'm Dr Cathy Betoin.
I am a practising clinical psychologist, an experienced teacher and a parent.
I developed the I Matter Framework and then set up the first specialist relationship health service because I could see that something really big was missing in our regular thinking about how to help improve adult and child wellbeing.
