Therapeutic Approaches:

Via the I Matter Clinics, we offer a number of clinical therapy services addressing a variety of behavioral and emotional challenges for children through adulthood. However all of our services are informed by the premises of the I Matter Framework.

This is important.   As most of the families that we support are seeking support for issues that are of a longer term nature, it is important to us that we ensure from the outset that we have some shared understanding of what we are going to work on together - and how the work can best proceed.    Most specifically we see the role of the adult - and notably the parent-carer role as absolutely key to best outcomes for your child.

Therefore we spend time at the outset getting to know you and sharing I Matter so that we can move forward together with some agreed priorities.   Once we have agreed on the core priorities then there may be a number of different therapeutic approaches that could be helpful.

So at the outset we will contact you to discuss the suggest an initial plan that could be most appropriate for helping you through your present circumstances. As each family situation is different, our staff will work with you to create an individualized plan that is specific to your situation.

 I MATTER ASSESSMENT AND RECOMMENDATIONS

An I Matter Assessment and Recommendations process is one of the key services we offer.   The assessment and recommendations process involves you sharing information with us and us providing you with some Introductory and First Steps Training.   We then talk with you to make some recommendations and agree some key priorities and goals.

Introduction
Indepth Assessment
First Steps
Consultation and Recommendations

The core of the assessment package uses online learning and can be supported through face to face sessions (in person or online) or via supported online study,   At present we have some funds for this initial assessment package through the Kendal GP network

THE I MATTER E|XTENDED TRAINING JOURNEY

If you are experiencing more escalated or complex challenges, then an I Matter Extended Training Journey is at the core of our services.   This equips you with advanced insight and skills that will support you in your very important role with your child.   I Matter Training is carefully structured but some people only do the First Steps and others study to more depth:

INDIVIDUALLY CUSTOMISED THERAPY:

Once we have shared some of the key ideas in an I Matter approach, Individual therapy is available to clients of all ages ranging from children to adulthood. In this type of therapeutic care, an assigned therapist will meet with you in a one-to-one manner to help you reach your identified goals. Your care is tailored to each client and may involve a variety of techniques from the therapist. When involving older clients, this type of therapy will typically take the form of traditional “talk therapy” to address current challenges. Other variations of individual therapy may incorporate play therapy and games, art therapy with mixed mediums, or other therapeutic methods such as writing, literature, or music to promote insight and expression.

Session frequency, duration, expectancy, and focus will differ for each client as each treatment is uniquely personalized to suit the specific needs of that individual.

*At this time, individual therapy services are being offered in person and through telehealth. Social distancing within our therapy offices has been implemented for in-person individual therapy. In addition, safety and sanitizing protocols have been put in place to keep both you and our staff as safe as possible.

I MATTER FAMILY THERAPY

I Matter Training can actively support a Family therapy based approach.  When we work with families we share I Matter thinking with you and use this as a way to help you think about how to restore healthy relationships between the different and varied relationships that exist between family members.  When participating in I Matter family therapy, all identified family members attend sessions with the therapist to collaboratively work toward the collective goals. A family therapy model allows for each member to not only understand their role within the family, but how to use their role for bringing about change in the overall family dynamics. Family members work with their assigned therapist to learn how their behaviors, mindsets, communication patterns, and roles contribute to family conflict. While each treatment for a family is highly individualized, family therapy may include talk, play, behavioral exercises, and assigned tasks to promote encouragement, nurture, structure, understanding, and change.  Session frequency, duration, expectancy, and focus will differ for each family.

In addition, safety and sanitizing protocols have been put in place to keep both your family and our staff as safe as possible. Availability of in-person services is dependent on the number of participating family members within session.

I MATTER COUPLES AND MARRIAGE COUNSELING:

The focus of I Matter couples and marriage counseling is to work on the relationship, typically between two people. As a complement to your I Matter Training we  will meet with you and your partner to help you both toward your identified goals in the relationship between you.   While the care of a couple or marriage is highly individualized, I Matter informed couples or marriage counseling may include talk, play, behavioral exercises, or assigned tasks to promote encouragement, nurture, acceptance, structure, understanding, and change. Session frequency, duration, expectancy, and focus will differ for each couple or marriage as each partnership is unique.

*At this time, I Matter couples and marriage counseling is being offered in person and through telehealth. Social distancing within our therapy offices has been implemented for in-person therapy. I MATTER PRE AND POST ADOPTION SUPPORT

I Matter pre and post adoption support focusses on preparing you for your very important role as the adult carers of one or more children who have experienced significant trauma and disruption.   This is a very demanding and specialist role.    Preparation is needed but so is careful and thoughtful care in the period post placement and subsequently.   We think of post adoption care like dentistry.   When there are some compllications it is important to attend regular check ups to ensure that not just the child but the adult-child relationship and the other relationships around the child are progressing in a healthy direction.

Prevention of difficulties through early thoughtful actions is much easier than reactive support when difficulties have become more established or entrrenched.   So we will work with you to develop a shared understanding and then support for an individually customised plan.

I MATTER CARE FOR COMPLEX AND LONGER TERM NEEDS

I Matter care for complex and longer term needs again focusses on preparing adults for their very important role as the adult carers of one or more children who has additional needs of a varied causes and impact.   In all situations the role of the adult who is caring for a child or young person with additional needs is a very demanding and specialist role.    It requires advanced insights and skills.   So preparation is needed but so is careful and thoughtful care over a longer term period   We think of complex needs care like dentistry.   When there are some compllications it is important to attend regular check ups to ensure that you are working effectively with your child to progress important skills.  A great deal of the therapeutic care happens not in the clinic but in your home setting.    So the role of the professional support service is to ensure that not just the child but the adult-child relationship and the other relationships around the child are progressing in a healthy direction.

Prevention of escalated difficulties through early thoughtful actions is much easier than reactive support when difficulties have become more established or entrrenched.   So we will work with you to develop a shared understanding and then support for an individually customised plan.

LIASION AND CORE TRAINING WITH SCHOOLS AND OTHER SERVICES

If you are caring for a child with additional needs then one of the most important objectives is to develop a shared approach at home and school so that everyone is working together with some shared priorities.   I Matter Training is designed to make the process of developing a shared approach much easier to achieve.

Our assessment process actively involves teaching staff and teaching assistants and our training structure can equip staff supporting children with additional needs with the key insights needed to help your child progress using a systematic plan.

THE COMMUNITY WHEEL - RELATIONSHIP HEALTH NETWORK

Once you have got some initial understanding of the I Matter Framework and its implications then you may be interested in joining the Community Wheel.  This is a membership network designed to support self-assesment, discussion and reflection about the many components that are part of the everyday parenting and caring role.

We have a Community Wheel Membership network for professionals and one for parents.

Each month we tackle a different theme informed by the needs and the questions of the community
