I thought it wouldn't work for us - I thought we were 'too far gone' but six months on my confidence is coming back, my children are attending school again and my husband is off antidepressants. The training showed us how everything is connected. Life can still be challenging but now I know why I Matter Parent of Three
I love it when I get emails from families like this:: 'Cathy just wanted you to know that we have had such a great half term - really relaxed. GH had a little friend over for a sleep over and it all went very well...' These are what a longer term I Matter programme is all about. We support a journey out of the fog of stress for everyone - and so I know just what a massive step forward this sort of ordinary everyday event this is for both adult and child! Yay!
We have been seeking feedback from professionals who have been training with us about the impact of I Matter Training on their professional approach - we have had feedback from Teachers, GPs, Social workers and Teaching Assistants. All have spoken about the impact both professionally and personally and all have encouraged us to keep going! We hope to write this up as a small study very shortly
I am seeing how without the right training or understanding it is easy as a carer or professional working with a complex child to start to feel very negative feelings. I used to work in residential care however I had no training, it left me feeling emotionally drained, stressed, like a failure. Sometimes my responses won't have been great. I can now see that for parents who have other stresses in their lives it is easy to start responding to negative behaviour in an equally negative way which then becomes a cycle. My current concern is that many parents or professional carers are clearly still not getting the training they need to be able to manage their own feelings and responses when caring for children or adults with complex needs.
I thought I was doing this course for professional reasons, but my relationship with my own child has deepened so much as a result of what I have been learning through I Matter training. Thank you!
Overall, we are in a much better place and now have a myriad of strategies and things to draw upon when things are not going well. So a big heart felt thank you for helping us with getting to a much more positive point as a family.
There has been such a change. He was totally shut down and not interacting. 1 year on he is playing with other children in the playground and even helping others out. I love working with him! Joined up home-school program for an adopted child aged 7yrs with questions regarding autism
'I'm so grateful to have found support that involves me and my child in our relationship together, and not just one or other of us in isolation. 2 months in, it has already made a huge difference and we are moving forwards after 4 years of confusion and angst. Thank you!' Parent of 9 year old
" If I had understood these ideas before I could have been a lot more effective. In previous jobs I have usually been left to get on with it. Now I have a framework that helps me know what I am doing and why in my work with complex young people and their families" Jenny, Family support worker
