I Matter Training for Parents-Carers

SUPPORTED I MATTER TRAINING CAN HELP YOU HELP CHILDREN WITH RAISED CONCERNS OR LONGER TERM NEEDS

WELCOME TO I MATTER TRAINING FOR PARENTS-CARERS

In these COVID-19 times, if you have a child who is anxious or challenging, it can be harder than ever to know how to help.  Where do you start when waiting lists for CAMHS and other support services are long, and when nothing seems to make sense?  Our I Matter Specialism for parents-carers is in equipping you via a carefully designed longer term assessment, training and coaching journey process.

Our goal is to help you to understand how to move forward with robust results.  We specialise in helping you help the child you have had concerns about for over 9 months - the child with social-emotional, developmental. or mental health challenges with whom you have tried all sorts of things that haven't yet seemed to help make the key difference.  I Matter equips you with thinking that starts with YOU and your key role.

Why Take Part in I Matter Training for Parents-Carers?

Your role as a parent or carer is incredibly important but its importance has been overlooked.

Right now with all the COVID-19 pressures your role is even more demanding and even more important.

I Matter Training is not a typical parenting class.  It offers you a careful integration of the important research evidence on what helps children to thrive and why - in an easy to understand format.

This knowledge is important for all parents and carers but it is particularly important if your child has any additional needs, or if they, or you, are struggling right now

The training also makes your role become VERY interesting.
Whats more the training can help improve adult-adult relationships

One of the most important ways that you can help your child is by taking the time to become really well informed and confident and effective in helping your child    We support you as you work in a step by step process.

The I Matter Training Journey

I Matter Training offers a carefully constructed results focussed comprehensive programme for both prevention of difficulties in relationships and addressing raised concerns or longer term needs.

The Stages of Training for Parents-Carers

1. Awareness Stage (RED)
2  Link Parent Role (PURPLE)
3. Stage 1 Extended Journey -Typical and Additional Needs (YELLOW)
4. Stage 2 Parent Mentor (GREEN)

We focus on supporting, or restoring, strong relationship health so that you can confidently play your own key roles. We help parents build the advanced insight and skills that matter for young people's healthy development and well-being.   This is not offered as a quick fix process.  Instead there is an extended process of learning and confidence building over time.

The training is best delivered with support from local I Matter
licensed professionals. So we are working hard to train a community of practitioners.  Please share this information if you think you know of a local professional who may be interested.

THE I MATTER CHALLENGE

We often refer to the I Matter Training Journey as an I Matter Challenge for two reasons.

i) It is challenging to find time to fit the learning in - parents and professionals are busy people!
ii) we want to help you keep focussed on the challenge of improving relationship health with a focus child

The I Matter Parent-Carer Journey and Challenge are for you if:

  • You live with children who are struggling or challenging and know that you want to ensure you have solid foundations
  • You want to learn some practical thinking which will give you a new angle on ideas that are familiar
  • You want support to feel more confident about how to help your child with clear explanations

  • You want support for better joined up thinking with your school or services or locality and/or family members.
You know that stress levels are high right now and that to offer your best you need to invest in your own understanding.
  • You know that the thinking we are doing now through the ongoing COVID period is really important

  • You want new thinking about how to support your child who has some additional needs
  • You are committed but are dissatisfied with being sent from pillar to post in the search for help
  • You want to know what the research is REALLY saying about how to help children who are struggling or challenging

  • You want to move forward at home as a team based on clear understandings that can support decision making
  • You want to know how to support your child's relationships skills
  • You want to be part of a supportive community

  • You’ve heard a bit about I Matter but you want to give yourself time to understand the principles
  • You have heard that this course will help you to help your child more effectively.
  • You understand that more advanced coaching and guidance depends upon making time to study

Is this training relevant to the full range of children needs?

Yes! This is an opportunity to put time into understanding the foundations of your parenting or caring role so that you can fine-tune your approach and shift your confidence and effectiveness with your child to a new level.

You'll learn specific skills to strengthen all relationships, as well as having opportunities to think about a wide range of interrelated issues.  You'll find that you have a lot more fun and pleasure in your role and a lot more confidence that you are making the difference that matters.

HUNDREDS OF PARENTS AND PROFESSIONALS HAVE TAKEN PART IN THIS TRAINING OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS.  NOW WE ARE MAKING IT MORE AVAILABLE VIA AN ONLINE LEARNING OPTION

HERE IS A SAMPLE OR WHAT PARENTS SAID RECENTLY:

FIRST STEPS COURSE IMPACT

The first steps clips are not very long so easy to fit in to my day. I like a person talking to me rather than reading it. It makes it more personal, more supportive and more reassuring. I like the reflective question at the end which makes me look back on what has happened recently in a positive way. They have helped me to reflect on my day/ Each 'thought for the day' has been very relevant in my day-to-day work and at home with my family.     Parent and Teacher who has completed the First Steps Course

We were in a state of crisis or overwhelm but ready to learn.   I have liked how clear & simply put together the whole course is.   it is so well delivered for anyone to understand and highly informative.  I enjoyed every bit of it.  It has been game changing for our family.   Parent of child with additional needs who completed First Steps Course

 INTENSIVE COURSE IMPACT

A someone who has worked with young people for 20 years and is now an adopter myself, it is so refreshing to actually have a framework that really works and is a concrete process. I have always wanted to make a difference, but not always known how. I think the potential for the framework to be help communities is enormous.    Adoptive parent and Youth Worker

FOUNDATION COURSE IMPACT

“This course has been so much more than I expected it to be. I have learned so many things that have changed my understanding of myself and of my child. I have worked with many services before this but this has really made the difference. Now I know why I Matter ”    Parent of a Complex Child

The I Matter approach of dealing with the adults before the children is such a useful way to look at things and has turned the dynamics on its head for me. I realised my stress levels are having a huge impact on all of us as a family and learning to change this is starting to make a difference.   Parent of Challenging Teen

"The information drawn together in I Matter Training is like gold dust for parents and carers and teachers of the child who is challenging us.  I am loving the training and finding it so interesting!" - Parent and Foster Carer.

It has been an excellent course.  I liked how it showed compassion to parents and children.   I am making lots of changes!   Parent of 2 and 5yr old who completed First Steps and Foundation A

FIRST STEPS, FOUNDATION A AND B IMPACT

I am a HLTA *Higher Level Teaching Assistant) but also a parent and foster carer. I work with primary aged children, have 3 teenagers, and foster toddlers! This course has been so valuable for each and every relationship I encounter on a daily basis.  HLTA, Foster Carer and Parent who completed First Steps and Foundation A and B

"The information drawn together in I Matter Training is like gold dust for parents and carers and teachers of the child who is challenging us.  I am loving the training and finding it so interesting!" - Parent and Foster Carer.

I will admit that when I started this programme I expected to have heard it all before because I have done so much of my own research...and attended so much training. However the clarity of this programme has struck me as if for the first time, which is fantastic.  Thank you.          Adoptive Mum and Teacher

“This course has been so much more than I expected it to be. I have learned so many things that have changed my understanding of myself and of my child. I have worked with many services before this but this has really made the difference. Now I know why I Matter ”    Teacher and Parent of a Child with an ASD diagnosis

"The experience of learning online has been really good and I have been quite surprised by that as I thought I would miss the interaction with other participants more than I have.  I appreciated the on-line consultation and was able to work on the things you suggested with my child.  I also think that being able to 'try out' my learning with my child as the course has gone along has also really helped make the course have an immediate impact in a way that many courses don't.  The time and energy invested by me have been very worthwhile.”     Adoptive Dad and social worker,
